Starting with silent cinema: look before you label it old

Nijii TV editorial guide

Silent cinema is not one style and it is not a test of patience. It is a large field of visual storytelling with its own rhythms, genres, performers, and technical experiments.

Choose an entry point, not an era

Comedy is often the easiest first doorway because physical timing reads immediately. Mystery and melodrama reward attention to framing and gesture. Adventure shows the scale and inventiveness of early screen craft. The right entry point is the story you want to experience, not the date on the title card.

Watch the frame do the work

When spoken dialogue is absent, the camera, performance, editing, costume, set design, and intertitles carry more of the narrative. It can help to watch a short sequence once for the action and once for the choices inside the frame.

Original presentation matters

Nijii preserves an eligible silent work's original presentation. Optional accessibility additions should be clearly described and reviewed; they are an alternate way into the film, not a replacement for its original form.
